SKYPE HOOK-UP with Wales

On March 21st our Club will hook-up with the Rotary Club of Cardiff Breakfast in an historic meeting for our club during their breakfast via SKYPE.  The hookup will be held at the Watts' home with a giant theatre screen, projector, camera and microphones.

The relationship between our Clubs stems from the visit of a GSE Team (described below) lead by Rotarian and Past President Steve Best from the Cardiff Club.

From 16th to 20th October 2009, our Club hosted the Group Study Exchange  (GSE) Team from the South Wales District 1150.  Steve, Carly, Claire, Jacqui and Kathryn, (with thanks to the wonderful support from the host families PP Reg and Helen, Honorary Rotarian Margaret, PP Theo and Honorary Rotarian Judith, PP Rolly, Rotarian Viv), are pictured below at Elizabeth Shopping Centre.  Rotarian and Past President Steve Best led the team of four young women from Wales, spending  five weeks in South Australia looking at areas in their chosen vocation.

Tour of the Playford Civic Centre

His Worship the Mayor of Playford, Martin Lindsell, hosted a Civic Reception and conducted a tour of the Playford Civic Centre for the GSE Team and hosts.

PP Rolly hosted a barbecue at his home on Sunday evening at which Steve gave a rendition of “Albert and the Lion” during which he accidentally poked Rolly’s dog with the “stick with the ‘orses ‘ead ‘andle”.

PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARDS.

These awards were created in 1975 by the Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills in Sydney and have now extended throughout the country and probably beyond. Pride of Workmanship Awards are generally nominated by an employer, sometimes working with a Rotarian. This award recognises and encourages employees to

“Do It Once, Do It Well, Build a Better Australia”.

Gemma Dickins,  Reg Driver and his wife Helen have known Gemma for over 10 years, firstly as an employee of Timber Art, Signs & Trophies in Elizabeth South and now as the Manager of that business.  Their reasons for nominating Gemma are clear, good customer service, attention to detail, accuracy, always important with engraving trophies, and a good value for money business.

Pat Cole,  Pat is employed by the City of Playford and has worked in a variety of roles in the Playford community. Working particularly in the townships of Virginia & One Tree Hill, Pat has done some great work delivering programs for older people.  She has extended delivery to include the Italian, Greek and Vietnamese communities. A wonderful advocate for marginalised members of the community, Pat is a proud local resident who often goes way beyond the expectation of her role.

Ryan Healy,  is employed casually by the City of Playford in the Social Inclusion Workgroup of Playford Community Services. Ryan is a valued member of the team who participates in staff planning sessions, often suggesting ideas and initiating contact. Other staff look forward to Ryan’s attendance as he is a whiz with Excel & Publisher and can complete tasks in half the time of many others.

Steve Garner,  of Steve Garner Memorials is local businessman who has demonstrated an understanding, empathetic and caring attitude towards his clients and is considered a credit to his industry. A very experienced and skilled businessman who knows his market and how to achieve successful outcomes for all concerned.

Linda Birkmyre: a fantastic identity who enjoys her work as the Co-ordinator of the Elizabeth Downs Food Co-op and the Mobile Food Co-op. Linda goes out of her way to provide the best advice and support to local families with nutritious food within their available budgets. She displays lots of energy and enthusiasm in making a big commitment to her workplace and she is able to communicate at all levels while keeping people engaged and involved.

COMMUNITY SERVICE EXELLENCE

Throughout our community many people quietly undertake a variety of roles to support and encourage people who on occasion need a helping hand. These people do not seek reward or acknowledgement and yet they are greatly appreciated by all. Tonight we wish to give recognition to a few who have been nominated by Rotary members for their service to the community.

Win Harrip. Bessie Dickens, Glennys Lehmann, Jocelyn Osborne, David Adamson, Rolly Dickins, Glenn Docherty

Win Harrip has made visits to people in the general section of the Lyell McEwin Hospital as well as the Palliative Care area for over 15 years, the last 5 years representing the Uniting Church as a Chaplain. Always willing to listen and help, this is a lady who understands other's problems and who gives confidence to those around her. Win is a person who is strong in adversity and with a wonderful sense of humour.    

Glennys Lehmann,  is very much part of the Midway Community House. Glennys has been involved since the beginning, as part of the forming committee, and has worked tirelessly as a volunteer and more recently as Co-ordinator.
The work of Midway Community house is well known to many of us, it caters to the needs of the local community and covers all ages. Glennys goes about her work quietly and calmly, always helpful and with a ready smile.

Jocelyn Osborne is the modern,  thinking Principal of the Elizabeth South Primary School. The school was Elizabeth’s first school.  Now sporting great classrooms, a first class library, undercover play areas, modern furniture and much much more.   Jocelyn’s leadership has been a key feature in bringing the entire school community together, she is valued and appreciated  and we wish her well in her efforts at the school.

An evening of football

The warm day did not dampen the spirits of avid football followers as teams competed in the first Football United – Unisa  Community Challenge Trophy.  The club provided the barbecue, cooking lean steak burgers, and serving up food, salad, vegie burgers or meat patties to the crowd of mostly young very hungry onlookers.
